This website is intended to explore the way our lives and the lives of people around us are impacted by decisions and choices we make daily. They range from small, seemingly insignificant ones, to major ones that we recognize as life-changing opportunities.
The manuscript by this title is in the final stages now, needing illustrations and a cover before being submitted for publication.
The pages of this book hold many stories from my own life, woven into the written conversation between two fictional pen pals who begin as strangers but part as special friends. Each of the girls is at a major crossroad facing the choices that will determine the direction of her life’s journey, and together they help each other forge a path to their dreams.
In the prologue I have included a true story from my youth as an example that colorfully illustrates why we need to carefully consider all decisions. Here are some excerpts from that story:
"One Sunday Mom packed a lunch and provisions appropriate for a trip that would fill the whole day, and surprised us with an outing to the Lava Beds National Monument. It is an ancient volcanic area, laced with lava tubes and caves, and volcanic rocks and formations of all kinds for kids to touch and explore. For Mom and Grandma there were birds and wildflowers to enjoy while we played among the rocks. About 3:30 Mom reluctantly told us it was time to leave, to be home by dark.
We all dutifully piled back into our little ‘52 Plymouth coupe—Mom, sister Evie, Cousin Billy, my elderly grandma, and, of course, me, at about age 14 and a real know-it-all. Off we went, on a seemingly ordinary return home, the memory of which remains a topic of light-hearted conversation in the family almost sixty years later. For me it has also become a metaphor for how one apparently insignificant choice, or a whole string of such tiny decisions, can have a lasting impact on a person’s life and the lives of those around them.”
The story goes on to tell how Mom decided to take an alternate road home. The trip was uneventful until we came to an unmarked fork in the road. Her decision to take the direction that appeared to be the best choice led us on a harrowing adventure through the mountains far into the night on a road that was too narrow to turn around, until we came to something that was blocking our way. The story continues.....
"By stopping on that small ridgetop, Mom had a chance to notice that, off to the side where the light from the headlights met the edge of the darkness, there was a place to turn around. It was the only one there had been in forty miles! Mom chose to back directly into the turn-around space, instead of backing straight up the road far enough to allow her to drive forward into it with the benefit of the headlights. I guess she thought it was safer than trying to back up on that narrow road in the dark with drop offs on both sides, but it spawned a bit of rancor and apprehension among the ranks. You see, backup lights were not invented yet. Rather, she had Grandma try to show her the way with a flashlight. In spite of their best efforts she backed over a rock that was hidden by weeds and got the car high centered on the differential.
Oh dang, wheels spinning but not going anywhere. Now what? ".....
Are you on the edge of your seat yet? Sorry, but you will just have to wait until the book is published to find out the rest of the story..... :)
HELLO MYRMIDON is filled with many such stories, as the girls share their problems and offer each other gentle counsel. In this process of guiding each other to make wise choices, they gain maturity and a new perspective on what it means to be responsible adults. They end their respective senior years, one in high school and the other in college, with much different outlooks than when they started their pen pal friendship.
I asked a friend to write a description of HELLO MYRMIDON, and here is what she wrote:
“Can one seemingly innocent choice change the course of your life? Observe as two young girls, strangers to each other, explore the path to empathy, honesty, and love. Told engagingly as a series of anonymous letters, HELLO MYRMIDON will leave you thinking about your own choices and your own future”. R.M.
THIS IS THE RESPONSE I WISH FOR EVERYONE WHO READS HELLO MYRMIDON, WHETHER THEY ARE OLDER FOLKS LOOKING BACK ON THEIR CHOICES, OR YOUNG PEOPLE LOOKING FOR THE PATH TO THEIR DREAMS. I WILL HAVE SUCCEEDED IF THEY CAN NOW SEE MORE CLEARLY THE POWER THAT DECISIONS HAVE HAD OR WILL HAVE IN THEIR LIVES.
HELLO MYRMIDON is the result of the first year of my voyage of self-discovery. Now you are invited to join me as I continue on this journey, exploring my world both past and present, and observing how it paints a picture of me. The goal will be to arrive at that mystical land of self-discovery, with many exotic ports of call along the way. Some visits will be brief, others will take several days to learn everything about the area.
Guest bloggers may also join us as passengers on our journey from time to time. You can find a list of their articles on the main blog page beside the list of my own articles.
As with an ocean voyage, the final destination will be beyond the horizon for most of the trip. But it will draw ever closer with each stop to learn and resupply, until we finally see it take shape in the distance. So if you are as curious as I am about this beautiful elusive land of self-discovery, then feel free to hop on board and sail with me. Along the way perhaps you too will begin a subtle and unexpected sojourn into your own past, and how it relates to your current self.
